Course description: Wellness for Young Womxn will take the form of a one week program focused on physical, social, emotional, and mental wellness. Students will take advantage of an opportunity to connect with others from near and afar through activities that facilitate self reflection, fitness, time outdoors, creativity, and more. * Note: the term “womxn” is used as a more inclusive definition of women and non-binary people of all different identities.
What to expect: Each day will include a series of Zoom-facilitated meetings that frame experiences between 8:30am and 2:30pm PDT. Activities like yoga, games, projects, and share outs will happen synchronously. Other activities such as art projects, reading, reflection in journal writing, nature walks, and more will be completed off screen during specific blocks of time followed by share-outs about individual experiences and exchanges of perspectives and learnings. The group will consist of students from around the US coming together to learn with and from each other, build community, and engage in self-exploration together (See sample schedule below).
Why a virtual summer program: With the loss of connection through schools, sports teams, clubs, and other activities over these last several months, this opportunity will be deliberately framed to provide students with a diverse and engaged learning community from a far. In addition to the loss of connection, this time has also meant a loss of autonomy and agency for many adolescents. This program is designed to foster a fortified inner life in addition to the opportunity for connecting with others. Finally, learning in community with others and being an essential member of a team can be an invaluable experience, and while there is much we can do within the confines of our homes, learning alongside others of similar age and life experiences is an irreplaceable chapter in the life of an adolescent. From a personal perspective, I believe this is a great need amongst adolescents, perhaps now more than ever, and it is a need I am uniquely equipped, and excited, to provide.
