Wellness for Young Womxn Fall 2020 will take the form of an after school program 1 day per week focused on physical, social, emotional, and mental wellness. Students will take advantage of an opportunity to connect with others from near and afar through activities that facilitate self reflection, fitness, time outdoors, creativity, and more. * Note: the term “womxn” is used as a more inclusive definition of women and non-binary people of all different identities.
Who it is for:
Ages 10-14 (for age exceptions consult with me at ky.gouchoehanas@gmail.com)

Cost: Equity, inclusion, and belonging are among the values and aspirations that motivate my creation of this opportunity. In an effort to make the experience accessible to as many young womxn as possible, the tuition is based on a “fair share” or "pay what you can'' approach, no questions asked. Amount due with registration is $250, $150, $50, or $15. This will cover the cost of all 10 sessions.
What to expect: Each Tuesday afternoon will include a Zoom-facilitated meeting that frames experiences between 3:30-5:30 PDT. Activities like yoga, group conversations, and share outs will happen synchronously. Other activities such as art projects, reflection in journal writing, nature walks, and more will be completed off screen during specific blocks of time followed by share-outs about individual experiences and exchanges of perspectives and learnings. The program is open to students from any school or state who come together to learn with and from each other, build community, and engage in self-exploration together.
Why a virtual program: With the loss of connection through schools, sports teams, clubs, and other activities over these last several months, this opportunity will be deliberately framed to provide students with a diverse and engaged learning community from a far. In addition to the loss of connection, this time has also meant a loss of autonomy and agency for many adolescents. This program is designed to foster a fortified inner life in addition to the opportunity for connecting with others. Finally, learning in community with others and being an essential member of a team can be an invaluable experience, and while there is much we can do within the confines of our homes, learning alongside others of similar age and life experiences is an irreplaceable chapter in the life of an adolescent. From a personal perspective, I believe this is a great need amongst adolescents, perhaps now more than ever, and it is a need I am uniquely equipped, and excited, to provide.
Instructor: Kyle is a Carolina Friends School alum and a graduate of Smith College, where she majored in Education & Child Study and Studio Art with a concentration in oil painting. Upon graduation Kyle served as a Progressive Education Lab teaching fellow at three independent schools in the northeast and a long term substitute at the Cambridge Friends School. She then added to her range of experiences and toolkit as a full time middle school social studies teacher, advisor, and coach at the Friends School of Wilmington before beginning her work at San Francisco Friends School as a teacher, advisor, and coach in 2019-20. Kyle’s interests span far and wide from athletics including soccer, tennis, basketball, ultimate frisbee and dance, through painting and fashion, to social justice, leadership, and human development. Having started her MSW in the fall of 2020 Kyle aspires to continue her work in schools and work to support adolescents and their families.
